So what would make a new mom try out cloth diapers. As if it is not enough of a challenge being a first time mom, throw cloth diapers into the mix and some might call you insane.
Already popular in Europe, cloth diapering is increasingly becoming a fashionable eco-trend in the US. There are lots of styles, sizes and even diapering service companies that launder your dirty diapers. Cloth diapers can become your natural choice once you get over the hurdle of getting used to the system.
Yes, just like anything disposable, disposable diapers are very convenient. Likewise, cloth diapering is not as cumbersome as some might make it seem. Cloth diapers are much better for the environment and also comfortable for your baby ( just to mention a few of its benefits). Personally, I think the best time to introduce yourself to cloth diapering is during your child's first 6 weeks. Why is that time period more suitable? During that time most moms spend a lot more time indoors/home so you don't have to worry about changing cloth diapers in an inconvenient place. In addition, newborns require a lot of diaper changes with less soiling per diaper; This would allow you to get familiar with changing multiple cloth diapers and developing a washing process that works for you. Some prefer to wash diapers every day, others like to do it every 2-3 days. Otherwise, you can also have a diaper service company handle your laundry. You can usually expect to add one or two extra loads to your weekly laundry to take care of the dirty diapers.

Here are a few tips to get you started.
1. A diaper pail for dirty diapers: You can actually line you pail to prevent the odor from staining the pail. Some companies sell cloth diaper pail liners.
2. If you have a newborn, I suggest you have 48 diapers to start with. You're likely to change diapers 10-12 times a day, with this many diapers in reserve you wouldn't have to do laundry every day. With toddlers you can manage with about 36 diapers or less.
3. You will need about 10 diaper covers. Diaper covers go over the cloth diapers to prevent the baby's clothes from getting wet.
4. Overnight for the heavy sleepers! You can insert thicker pads in your cloth diapers to improve the absorbency. These pads are referred to as liners or doublers. Now, if your child wakes up every 2 hours like mine did, you wouldn't have to worry about the last step. :).
There are tons of resources to help you get started with cloth diapering. As time goes on you will formulate your own cloth diapering system that works for you. All the best and send your comments to feedback@awowbaby.com
